A Stylish Silchester House Wedding for Sarah and Joshua

A small, perfectly planned wedding with plenty of yellow and grey details at Silchester House.

The Proposal

Sarah and Joshua met at the University of the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey in January 2012 and a marriage proposal by Joshua followed four years later. The couple had planned a trip to the Isle of Wight for Sarah’s birthday and enjoyed a picnic, a trip to the zoo and a drive past a picture-perfect view point which looked out on to the English Channel and vast blue skies. The couple decided to make this their picnic spot and whilst Sarah admired the view, Joshua, who was supposed to be preparing the picnic, instead, pulled a ring out of his pocket and bent down on one knee. Joshua had bought Sarah the ring she’s always dreamed of having and the happy couple celebrated their engagement and returned home to share the news with their family and friends.

Booking a Country House Wedding Venue in Berkshire

Sarah had looked at a variety of stylish country house wedding venues online way ahead of her engagement, so she was very prepared when the day came when she was officially allowed to consider booking one. Within hours of having an engagement ring on her finger, Sarah had called the Bijou Weddings team and booked an appointment to visit Silchester House on one of their forthcoming open day dates.  As soon as the couple walked through the front door at Silchester House they knew it was ‘the one’. Silchester House ended up being the only wedding venue that the couple viewed in person and a date was booked for April 2018, giving them just under 2 years to plan.

Sarah used Bijou’s handy online wedding planner most weekends. “It was great to change things and see an instant price change as you could budget and make sure that everything was as you wanted. The staff always reply within hours and are helpful all the time.” explained Sarah.

Bridal Fashion

Sarah had seen a wedding dress on social media and in a shop window and knew that it was ‘the one’. It was the 8th gown she tried on at Wed2Be and as the bride is only 5ft tall, she had previously had trouble finding something that was of the right length. Knowing that the dress fitted well, she then decided to transform it, to suit her style and body shape perfectly. Alteration specialists Nortier Shallow made adjustments to the gown and turned it in to Sarah’s dream wedding dress.

The bride teamed her gown up with a pretty pair of Mary Jane wedding shoes from Rainbow Club. They were later dyed a bright yellow shade to tie in with the rest of the wedding colour scheme.

Sarah chose her best friend Amy and her cousin, Aimee, to be her bridesmaids. The girls wore floor-length, grey dresses with sparkly embellished lace on the top, from the Quiz range at Debenhams. The bride and her bridesmaids all arrived at Silchester House at 11am on the morning of the wedding so that they could prepare together in luxury, overlooking the wondrous grounds and having their hair and makeup done ahead of the 1pm wedding ceremony in The Music Room.

Joshua bought his suit from wedding suit specialists, Slaters. He teamed his smart, three-piece blue suit up with a white shirt, a yellow tie and a rose gold pocket watch. He looked fashion-fabulous on the day, as did his best man Alex. Sarah bought Joshua a pair of brown Ted Baker shoes to complete his wedding day style.

The Big Day: Saturday 28th April, 2018

The couple thought that having an earlier ceremony would give them more time to celebrate with family and friends, therefore, they booked their ceremony time for 1pm, giving themselves, and their suppliers, 2 hours to prepare the country house wedding venue ahead of the ceremony.

The bride and her bridesmaids had a lovely time getting ready before the father of the bride, Paul came in to the bridal suite to find his daughter looking like a princess. Paul proudly walked his daughter down the aisle behind the bridesmaids and presented his daughter to Joshua who was ready to begin their future together. The couple said their vows in front of 66 guests, in the romantic Music Room at Silchester House, overlooking the beautiful Berkshire country grounds.

Ambience Venue Styling decorated The Music Room beautifully, with dark grey chair covers with a touch of yellow. Stunning twinkly canopy style sashes gave the ceiling the wow-factor and drew attention to the elegant chandelier that hangs down from the centre of The Music Room. Reception tables followed the colour scheme with grey napkins and gold and yellow accessories. Bijou Florist Sonning Flowers were responsible for the burst of colour around the country house wedding venue; sunshine yellow flowers sat on mantle pieces and vases overflowing with pussy willow at the altar were perfectly placed. The team at Sonning Flowers also created the bridal party flowers, buttonholes for the men and beautiful floral arrangements for the wedding ceremony and reception tables. Vibrant spring-time shades of yellow and white were detailed throughout the wedding venue and Sarah loved her bouquet so much that she couldn't bring herself to toss it to her single friends.

After the ceremony, the couple walked out in to the Silchester House garden and were showered with confetti by family and friends. A drinks reception was enjoyed on the lawn where children could run and enjoy the beautiful Berkshire country grounds.

The couple welcomed their guests back in to The Music Room at 3pm and a wonderful wedding banquet was served between 3:30pm and 5:30pm. Guests found their seats by looking at an elegant, hand-made mirrored wedding table plan.

Wedding Banquet Menu

~
Starter: Ham hock & tarragon terrine with quails eggs and piccalilli
~
Main Course: Slow braised sticky Hampshire beef with creamed parsnip mash, Root vegetable crisps and Olivette carrots
~
Dessert: Treacle tart with marinello cherry, clotted cream and Anglaise custard

After emotional wedding speeches, guests were able to mingle and celebrate with the bride and groom as the Bijou Team prepared The Music Room so that it was dance-floor ready! Guests enjoyed the house and grounds, and all managed to add their inked thumbprint and signature to a special tree print that the Sarah and Joshua now have framed and hanging in their house.

The couple cut through an exceptional skimmed wedding cake designed by Bijou Partner Le Papillion, decorated with a rose gold drip and complete with yellow flowers added by Sonning Flowers.

As a surprise for their guests, Sarah and Joshua (and Paul) had been going to private dance classes with DanceRight, located in Basingstoke. Sarah actually danced with her father first, and surprised the whole evening guest list of 72, to a perfectly danced routine to ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong. Followed shortly by another show-stopping dance by the bride and groom to ‘Over and Over Again’ by Nathan Sykes.

The couple enjoyed organising their gift list with John Lewis and spent their exciting honeymoon in South Africa, spending the first 3 nights on Safari and that last 8 nights in Mauritius.

Sarah and Joshua truly enjoyed their wedding day at Silchester House, and said that future couples should “take some time alone to breathe and properly speak to each other. You will spend all day talking to other people, those 5/10 mins we spent alone outside were perfect. We just chatted about the day and thought that this is the start of a very new chapter; it was lovely to be alone.”
