A Friday Wedding at Silchester House for Amy and Richard

Amy and Richard celebrated their romantic spring nuptials on a glorious day with 60 day guests and 40 evening guests at Silchester House in Berkshire

A Surprise Proposal

Amy and Richard knew each other during their school days but didn’t ‘officially’ meet until they were at a house party during later years. After a 7-year relationship, the couple decided to holiday in Sorrento for Amy’s birthday. On the day of Amy’s actual birthday, Richard took his lovely girlfriend out for an afternoon of Italian wine tasting, wonderful views and a very special surprise. He’d given Amy the gift of a dress to wear on the evening of her birthday and before dinner, they sat on the veranda. Richard approached Amy with a heart shaped box containing two hollow chocolates (one milk, one white) and a note saying ‘pick your favourite’. Amy chose her favourite, the white chocolate, and inside it was a stunning sapphire engagement ring along with a note saying ‘will you marry me?’. Richard had put a Haribo ring and the same note inside the milk chocolate, just in case!

The couple enjoyed their engagement and spent time choosing the right wedding venue along with saving money so that they could afford everything they wanted on their special day.

Finding a Small Wedding Venue

The newly engaged couple booked appointments to look around no less than 10 wedding venues on their search to find ‘the one’. Silchester House had come up on a google search when Amy was looking for wedding venues close to home. The couple knew that once they had learned all about what their wedding day could be like at Silchester House, no other venue could compare.

The couple loved the lay out of the Silchester House, along with the homely feel, the quiet location, the beautiful grounds and the stunning interior. “It felt like it was its own little world once you were through the gates” said Amy. “Every time we visited Silchester, we were greeted with a very warm welcome, and a nice cold glass of bubbles! If we called up with questions, or emailed with concerns, we were answered immediately. The chain of communication was fantastic, and, as a soon to be wed couple, that is really key to keeping stress levels down!”

Wedding Flowers

It took a long time for Amy and Richard to find the right florist, but it was worth the wait as they were beyond delighted with the floral décor displayed throughout Silchester House once their big day arrived. Gerberas and Roses decorated the day and the grooms party wore pretty rose buttonholes, as did the little page boy. An absolutely stunning floral feature decorated the registrars tale and gorgeous pillars stood either side of the altar.

Wedding Attire

Amy went shopping for her wedding dress to four different stores just 10 months before he wedding. She remembers choosing 6 dresses to try on in the fourth shop, but after not falling in love with anything, the shop assistant then went to select a gown that she thought might suit Amy. Designed by Benjamin Roberts, the ballgown design featured a sweetheart neckline and Amy had ‘that moment’ as soon as she stepped in to it. From that moment on, Amy fell more and more in love with her wedding dress every time she tried it on.

Amy ordered two pairs of shoes to wear on her wedding day. An ivory pair from Pink by Paradox and a pair of navy blue heels (to match the wedding colour scheme), with a special inscription on the sole, quoted from Harry Potter. One shoe had ‘after all this time?’ on the sole and the other stated ‘always’.

Amy was ‘turned in to a bride’ by a recommended hair and makeup stylist called Fiona. The bride chose to wear her hair half up/half down and curly and so that she felt like a princess on the day, a tiara was a must!

Amy’s sister and 3 best friends were automatically assumed to play the role of bridesmaids on the day. Their stunning, knee length dresses came from Monsoon and all of the bridesmaids were delighted with Amy’s versatile choice.

The groom’s suit turned out to be more of a faff than choosing Amy’s wedding dress. The wedding day was drawing closer but Richard had not yet started looking for his wedding attire. Amy decided to take control and suggested that the couple went shopping to look for suits for the groom and the ushers. In the end, the couple found all of the groom’s party attire quite quickly in a suit shop called Skopes, but Amy was a little disappointed that she knew what her groom would be wearing on the big day. Richard took his bride to be’s disappointment on board and went back to Skopes to buy himself a beautiful three-piece suit designed by Jeff Banks.

The Big Day: Friday 5th May, 2017

The bride was only 5 minutes late to her 2pm wedding ceremony in The Music Room at Silchester House. The room looked wonderfully light as the bride walked down the aisle and the gorgeous views across the country grounds made the couple and their guests feel like they were far away from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

The bride walked down the aisle with her father to Pachelbel’s Canon in D and emotions ran high as as the bride walked towards her groom. A harpist played throughout the signing of the register and two readings, ‘He Never Leaves the Seat Up’ and ‘He’s Not Perfect’ were both read during the ceremony.

As the sun was shining, the newlywed couple and their guests were able to enjoy reception drinks and nibbles on the lawn of Silchester House. Their couple’s wedding photographer, Adam Hillier, was able to capture some wonderful group and couple shots before everyone headed back inside the venue for a delightful three course meal which commenced at 4:45pm.

Wedding reception tables were named after one of Amy and Richard’s pets, past and present, and each guests was a given a packet of Love Heart sweets and vial of heart bubbles, purchased from the British Heart Foundation in memory of Amy’s late auntie. The tables were decorated around a navy blue colour scheme and tall floral arrangements also featured a hint of blue. To give the tables an extra dose of love, the couple cut love stories in to heart shapes and scattered them across the tables. The banquet was served for 60 guests and each guest found their seat by looking on a wonderful, bespoke framed table plan which followed the style of the couple’s wedding stationery.

Wedding Banquet Menu

Starter: Baked French brie parcel, served warm with a bacon, redcurrant and caramelised orange salad
~
Main Course: Classic roast breast of free range chicken served with seasonal vegetables, duck fat potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy
~
Dessert: Chocolate pot with a melting middle, Jack Daniels ice cream and chocolate crumbs

Richard’s father made the couple a unique wishing well to display at their wedding reception for guests to drop cards and gifts and the Bijou DJ entertained the day guests plus an additional 40 evening guests, throughout the night.

The couple felt that having a homemade wedding cake would be a great way to bring both families together ahead of the wedding. So, the couple asked both of their mothers, Amy’s auntie and Richard’s granddad to bake a tier each and then cover the cake with pastel colour iced roses and green foliage.

Two of the fireplaces at Silchester House were decorated with photo frames – one with the wedding photographs of family members and the other in memory of loved ones who would have loved to have been at the wedding.

The Honeymoon

The newlywed couple spent their honeymoon travelling around Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The location was a joint decision, but Richard did all of the hard work when it came to planning all of the finer details.

A message from the bride: “Richard and I had the most magical day of our lives. We knew it would be special, because at the end of the day, we wanted to be married and we knew that part was guaranteed, but every part of it was so much better than we could have imagined. We were in the best company, in a beautiful location – even the sun decided to be kind and make an appearance. Richard surprised me several times during the day – but my favourite surprise was his ‘AMY’ on the bottom of his shoe – similar to the ‘Andy’ on the bottom of Woody’s boot in Toy Story. Bijou made our wedding day run smoothly, and provided such a high standard of service, as well as a well-kept and beautifully presented venue. We really couldn't thank you all enough for looking after us on the best day of our lives.”
