Anna and Ben Celebrated a Spring Wedding at Cain Manor

Anna and Ben tied the knot after having taken just six months to plan their barn-style wedding at Cain Manor.

A real wedding story that took place at Cain Manor in Surrey during the spring

About the Couple

Anna, a television publicist and Ben, who works in financial services, met and fell in love. After a whirlwind romance and a proposal, the couple started planning their wedding, knowing that they were looking for a wedding venue with a barn-style feel to it. “I fell in love with Cain Manor immediately” said Anna and therefore the couple booked their wedding date for April 18th, 2015, giving them just 6 months to plan their special day!

The Day

Anna was absolutely terrified on the day of her wedding. She got ready at her family home with her bridesmaids and parents. “I had been so calm the whole time, even getting ready that morning. Then on the car ride over to Cain Manor I was so scared. I remember clutching my dads hand and before we were about to walk down the aisle - I was breathing so fast!!” However, as soon as Anna saw Ben she felt better and truly enjoyed the rest of her romantic wedding ceremony.

Ben and Anna chose to have a civil ceremony rather than get married in a church so Cain Manor was perfect in the fact that everything could be held all in one place. The couple loved the beautiful gardens and patio outside Cain Manor and as the UK weather is so unpredictable they weren’t going to rely it being sunny, so it helped to have great indoor space at Cain Manor too.

The Theme

Anna just wanted her wedding to be very classic. She wasn’t 100% sure what sort of theme she wanted when the couple started looking for barn-style wedding venues, but their theme ended up being classic with a rustic twist. Anna chose blue and cream flowers with little bits of yellow dotted to add a bit more colour and because it was a spring wedding. All of the wedding decorations were shabby chic style birds and hearts and the name places and favours were made with brown kraft paper and lace.

The Venue

As she’d grown up in Guildford, Anna always knew that she wanted to get married in Surrey. So, shortly after their engagement Anna and her mother went hunting for the right wedding venue! The couple had originally started their wedding venue search by doing a google search for “barn wedding venues in Surrey”. They saw about 7 different venues, one of which was Bijou’s very own Botleys Mansion, which she loved.  However, after a recommendation, Anna went and saw Cain Manor and the rest is history...!

The low beams, fire place, cosy sofas gave Cain Manor the homely feel that Ben and Anna were after. Plus, the fact that the venue also had 14 bedrooms on site meant that everyone could have breakfast together the following morning. Anna really wanted their wedding to have a fun relaxed feel to it and that is how she felt when she walked in the entrance of Cain Manor – comfortable and relaxed. The couple were very lucky on the day that the sun was shining; guests could mingle and truly enjoy the luxurious landscaped gardens surrounding the venue. The barn was used for the wedding breakfast but then transformed into the dance floor in the evening purely by pushing some tables back and adding disco lights.

Wedding Planning

Anna pretty much did it all of her wedding planning by herself. The couple went for a menu tasting session at Cain Manor and chose to have beef for the main course which was just incredible!

Anna made a lot of the extra wedding details herself; she made all the place names and favours with her bridesmaids which was fun. Her father has really lovely writing, so he wrote all the place names once Anna had made them.

Wedding Day Details

Anna and Ben hired a harpist to play music throughout their wedding ceremony; it was so romantic. During the wedding breakfast the couple chose to have Cain Manor’s self-playing piano playing up on the Minstrels’ Gallery.

For the wedding breakfast, Ben and Anna chose a tasty wedding menu that included ham hock with quail egg and asparagus to start, beef with mash potatoes (their favourite), veg and gravy and then a chocolate melting pot with Jack Daniels ice cream for dessert. It was so delicious and the couple received so many compliments on the food afterwards.

The two best men, Anna’s father and Ben all read speeches during the wedding reception and Ben’s ended with a lovely message which was a quote from his favourite author, Kurt Vonnegut. It read, “If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is”.

The wedding cake was simple and classic and included three tiers filled with chocolate, vanilla and fruit. The couple ordered their wedding cake from Waitrose and it was delivered to Cain Manor on the morning of the wedding. As the weather was so beautiful the newlywed couple were able to cut the cake outside!

The Evening

For the evening reception, Ben and Anna hired a band – Life & Soul. They were brilliant and got everyone dancing. For their first dance song the couple chose ‘At Last’ by Etta James. The last song the couple danced to was Oasis, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’. Everyone gathered in a huge circle and danced with Ben and Anna in the middle. A great and memorable way to end a perfect day.

Anna’s Top 5 Wedding Day Moments:

  • When everyone danced in a circle at the end of the night.
  • A moment alone at sunset, taking everything in.
  • Everyone cheering during the confetti shot as it just felt so special.
  • When Anna threw her bridal bouquet… and caught it herself; a really funny moment.
  • Walking down the stairs at home and seeing her dads face when he saw his little girl as a bride; it was a very special moment.

The Honeymoon

Ben and Anna celebrated their marriage by travelling to Mauritius for their honeymoon.

Top Tips for Future Bijou Brides:

  • Don’t get too caught up on all the little details and enjoy the planning, it goes so fast. Shop around for the little bits and bobs too. Etsy was fab.
  • Book a videographer – it is amazing watching back the speeches and the ceremony as I don’t remember so much due to nerves
  • Allocate enough time for the photography. It can be stressful getting everyone together so only get the images of the people you really want in them and keep shot list to a minimum. You want enough time for pictures of just the two of you as well.
  • Take few minutes every hour to take it all in. Walk off together if you can and try and remember everything!
