When it comes to planning a wedding proposal its always good to be prepared for every eventual outcome; whether you plan on proposing on holiday, at home, by the sea or surrounded by lots of other people. We’ve picked out five of what we think are the best and most romantic proposals from well known movies and five movies that feature weddings. If you’re feeling romantic and in the mood for marriage after watching them why not pop the question? Or, if you’re already engaged then maybe watching the movies featuring weddings might inspire you to kick-start your wedding plans.
Movies Featuring Engagements
When Harry Met Sally
Usually it’s the ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ scene that springs to mind when thinking of this Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal classic, but we’ve voted for the heart-warming proposal on New Years Eve confessing that “when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Sweet Home Alabama
A complicated love story featuring Reese Witherspoon and Patrick Dempsey that features an uber romantic engagement inside a huge Tiffany & Co in New York; every girl’s dream come true. We don’t to spoil the ending…so you’ll have to watch the movie to see the engagement, wedding and a love story re-kindle for yourselves. Plus, we think that marrying someone so that you can ‘kiss them any time you want’ is a great reason!
Pride & Prejudice
Jane Austen’s timeless love story has seen women falling head over heels for Mr Darcy since the early 1800s. Matthew Macfadyen more than does the role justice and successfully pops the question to a rather besotted Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) on a misty moor at dawn.
“You have bewitched me, body and soul. I love… I love… I love you. And I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.” What.a.guy!
Time Traveler’s wife
Henry (Eric Bana) has the ability to time travel, involuntarily. His continuing unavoidable absences create complications in his life but it means he returns with knowledge of the future and the ability to change his destiny. So, he already knows she is going to say ‘yes,’ but for that split second…
Sense and Sensibility
Ok, so another Jane Austen… but the 1995 adaptation just couldn’t be ignored. Emma Thompson’s performance as Elinor is exquisite – the moment she realises the man she has been desperately in love with for so long (Hugh Grant) is finally free to marry her, the tidal wave of emotion she releases makes every viewer just that little bit teary.
Movies Featuring Weddings
Besides our favourite movie proposals, there are also a number of movies out there that feature amazing weddings. If you’re getting ready to tie the knot and would like to plan a night watching movies that include weddings, either as a couple or with your bridesmaids, below is a list of movies that include weddings, not to be missed.
Father of the Bride
This 90s classic featuring Diane Keaton and Steve Martin as the mother and father of daughter Annie, who comes home from college engaged to be married. Witness the fun and sometimes stressful task of planning Annie’s beautiful wedding which takes place at their truly stunning American home.
If you’re up for a non-stop laugh then Bridesmaids is one to watch! From shopping for dresses to planning the hen party, this movie will have you giggling from beginning to end. Look out for the OTT bridal shower with super cute favours given out at the end.
Sex and the City 1 and 2
Both Sex and the City movies feature weddings, but the first one isn’t as lavish as Carrie Bradshaw had originally hoped. The wedding in Sex and the City 2 however sees Stanford Blatch and Anthony Marentino tie the knot in pure celebrity style, with a very special guest actually marrying the pair. The wedding features fairly near the beginning of the film so you won’t have to wait too long to see it.
My Best Friends Wedding
Julia Roberts causes trouble for Dermot Mulroney in this movie as she realises that she is in love with her best friend during the run up to his wedding. She then tries to cover it up by pretending she’s engaged to someone else, but in the end everyone ends up happy and life goes on.
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Four Weddings and a Funeral is a British classic, that not only features the fabulous Hugh Grant, but it takes you on a love tale of two characters that keep bumping into each other at various weddings, and a funeral, in a very short space of time.
In Bride Wars you’ll get to see two best friends plan their weddings at the same time, at the same dream wedding venue in New York. Their competitive wedding planning process is fun to watch, but unfortunately on the day things don’t go quite to plan.
Proposing at the Cinema
If you and your other half love watching films together then why not consider popping the question at the cinema? You could get down on one knee in front of the whole audience, or hide a ring box inside tub of popcorn. Alternatively, you could print out some faux tickets to the cinema and have the words ‘will you marry me’ as the title of the film.
Proposing at Home During a Film
Do you and your partner have a favourite film that you love to watch together over and over? If so, re-creating the proposal from the film, as you’re actually watching it, could be a great way to ask for your other half’s hand in marriage.
